Grab-Two CEO Dismisses AI as a Threat to Game Development, Especially for Blockbusters Like GTA 6

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has publicly downplayed the potential of artificial intelligence to disrupt the game development process, particularly when it comes to creating high-profile titles like the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6. His comments come amid growing discussion about the impact of generative AI tools, such as Google’s Project Genie, on the creative industries.

AI Tools as Beneficial Creation Tools, Not Replacements

Zelnick addressed concerns about AI’s potential to automate game development during an interview with The Game Business Show, stating that he was “kind of stunned by the market’s reaction” to the emergence of AI tools. He believes that AI should be viewed as a beneficial tool for developers, rather than a threat to their jobs or the industry as a whole. “These tools may help you create assets, but that won’t help you create hits,” Zelnick explained. He emphasized that while AI can assist in generating assets, the creation of a successful game requires a level of human creativity and engagement that AI currently cannot replicate. “There are loads of assets out there now. It doesn’t matter if you push a button to create an asset, or it takes you six weeks, at the end of the day, you have an asset,” Zelnick said. [Kotaku]

Why AI Can’t Replicate a Hit Game

Zelnick drew a parallel to the music industry, noting that AI can now generate professionally recorded songs from text prompts, but these creations often lack the depth and appeal to hold a listener’s attention beyond a brief novelty. He argued that the same principle applies to game development: AI can create components, but it cannot create the cohesive, engaging experience that defines a hit game.

“The notion that somehow fresh tools would allow an individual to push a button and generate a hit and bring it to many millions of consumers around the world, it’s a laughable notion,” Zelnick stated. GTA 6 and the Future of AI in Gaming

Zelnick’s comments specifically addressed concerns about Grand Theft Auto 6, confirming that the game will not rely on generative AI for its core development. He expressed confidence that the game will appeal to a broad audience, stating, “If you have a console and you’re over 17, just explain to me how is it that you’ve decided, ‘No, no, GTA 6. Not interested.’ I just don’t see it.” [Reddit]

While dismissing AI as a replacement for human creativity, Zelnick acknowledged its potential as a tool to assist developers in creating assets and streamlining certain aspects of the development process. Take-Two’s focus remains on delivering high-quality, engaging games that prioritize human creativity and innovation. [GameSpot]
