Jessie Buckley Hailed as ‘Best of Ireland’ as Tánaiste Criticizes Conor McGregor
Irish Deputy Premier Simon Harris has sharply contrasted the achievements of actress Jessie Buckley with the behavior of mixed martial artist Conor McGregor, declaring Buckley represents “the best of Ireland” while McGregor embodies “the very worst.” The comments came during a media briefing in London on Monday, following a meeting with UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
Oscar Win and National Pride
Harris emphasized the significance of Buckley’s recent Academy Award win for Best Actress, awarded for her role in Hamnet. He described her as “an incredible person who’s shattered a glass ceiling, the first Irish woman to win best actress at the Oscars, an incredible ambassador for our country.” He stated the celebration of Irishness should focus on individuals like Buckley, highlighting values of inclusion and excellence.
McGregor’s Controversies
In contrast, Harris reiterated his critical view of Conor McGregor, citing a November 2024 civil court ruling in Dublin where McGregor was found liable for damages in a rape case brought by Nikita Hand, also known as Nikita Ni Laimhin . Harris also referenced McGregor’s previous meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on St. Patrick’s Day, where McGregor reportedly criticized the Irish Government.
US Visit and Government Response
When questioned about reports of McGregor’s presence in Washington, D.C. For St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, Harris stated, “It’s a matter for the United States of America who they let into their country.” However, he firmly maintained his negative assessment of McGregor’s character and influence.
A Celebration of Irish Values
Harris concluded by reinforcing the importance of celebrating “Irishness, of our values, of inclusion, of the best of us,” explicitly stating that Conor McGregor does not embody those values. He also congratulated Richard Baneham on his third visual effects Oscar for his work on Avatar: Fire And Ash.
