Robotic Surgery: A Growing Reality
Robotic surgery isn’t a futuristic fantasy-it’s happening now in hospitals worldwide. Different technologies are creating an ecosystem that helps surgeons improve precision, safety, and efficiency. A prime example is the da Vinci robotic system, one of the first to assist in surgery. Its initial version launched in 1999.
After nearly three decades, the da Vinci system has evolved to its fifth generation with the recent launch of the da Vinci 5 in Spain. It has performed almost 17 million surgical procedures globally.
Currently, over 170 da Vinci robotic systems, manufactured by Intuitive, are in use in Spanish hospitals and distributed exclusively by ABEX Robotics Excellence. More than 100 of these systems were installed in the last five years. in 2024 alone,Spanish hospitals performed over 31,000 procedures using this minimally invasive technology. As 2005, more than 170,000 patients in the Iberian Peninsula have undergone surgery with the da Vinci system.
