Ted Danson’s Unexpected Curb Your Enthusiasm Revelation

Ted Danson initially thought he was doing Larry David a favor when he agreed to appear on Curb Your Enthusiasm during its first season. Turns out, the favor was returned tenfold.

On his podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Danson revealed the surprising origin of his involvement in the beloved HBO series.

“We watched the pilot of Curb, Mary [Steenburgen] and I. Mary thought it was great. I thought it absolutely sucked,” he admitted. “And I felt sorry for my new friend, Larry David. So in trying to be encouraging kind of thing, I said, ‘You know, if you ever need us to play ourselves, we’d be happy to’,” Danson explained.

His initial lack of enthusiasm shifted drastically as he embraced the experience, saying: “And in that sort of idiocy, you know, yeah, I ended up being part of something that changed my life,” adding that “it reinvigorated my desire to be funny.”

Danson expands on his journey, revealing how he quickly became a fan favorite, despite his character being loathed by David’s.

“I was like, ‘Wait, what?’ Because I never read the scripts,” he recalled. “I went to Jeff Garlin, and he said, ‘You don’t know? You’re the worst human being on the planet. Larry hates you!’” Danson continued, highlighting the unexpected nature of his character arc.

He and his real-life wife, Oscar-winning actress Mary Steenburgen, joined the show in its first season, making their Curb debut in episode two.

Over the course of the series, Danson graced the show in every season except two and eight, while Steenburgen only appeared in seasons one, six, seven, and nine. In the ninth season, Danson’s character embarks on a romance with Cheryl Hines, leading to an eventual marriage.

Danson’s story is a testament to the enduring charm and unpredictable nature of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It’s a reminder that sometimes the roles we least expect can become the most rewarding.
