Father Ted Festival Returns to Irish Island, Raising Funds for Breast Cancer Ireland

Inis Mór, Aran Islands – Hundreds of fans of the beloved Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted have descended upon Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Islands, for the annual TedFest. The festival, celebrating its 20th year, offers devotees a chance to immerse themselves in the world of Craggy Island, complete with themed events and a healthy dose of Irish hospitality.

A Pilgrimage to Craggy Island

TedFest began in 2007, born from a conversation between two men in Sri Lanka who bonded over their shared love of the show. The festival aims to provide an experience beyond a typical television convention, offering attendees the opportunity to “live the Craggy Island dream.” The island of Inis Mór was chosen for its resemblance to the fictional Craggy Island setting of the series.

Events and Entertainment

This year’s festival features a range of events inspired by the show, including the Lovely Girls Parade, a competition to locate the most charming contestant, and the Celibate Olympics. Attendees can also participate in Ted’s Got Talent, Mecca Bingo, and other quirky competitions. A key feature of this year’s event is the return of the Sacred Heart tapestry, a recognizable prop from Father Ted and Dougal’s living room.

Celebrity Guests and Local Impact

The festival welcomes cast members from Father Ted, including Joe Rooney, who played Father Damo, and Patrick McDonnell, who portrayed Eoin McLove. Rooney has been enjoying the festivities, including disrupting a five-aside football match and hosting the Toilet Duck awards for up-and-coming comedians. McDonnell is seeking out talent and will present the Blind Date competition.

TedFest provides a significant boost to the local economy, particularly during the quieter winter months. Eimear Donohue, owner of Aran Island Seafoods and café, noted the positive impact on local commerce, stating it’s a welcome event before the busy summer season.

Fundraising for Breast Cancer Ireland

Beyond the fun and games, TedFest 2026 is raising funds for Breast Cancer Ireland. Fionn Seavers, an RTÉ news video editor, initiated the fundraising effort in memory of his cousin, Emma Hannigan, a writer and Breast Cancer Ireland Ambassador who passed away in 2018 after battling the disease multiple times. Seavers highlighted the importance of supporting research and treatment for breast cancer, particularly on International Women’s Day.
