€14,000 Temporary Gate Delays TDs and Sparks Controversy

A controversial temporary security gate installed at Leinster House, which reportedly caused delays for TDs during votes, cost taxpayers nearly €14,000 before being swiftly removed.

Documents released by the Department of Public Expenditure in response to a parliamentary question from Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín reveal that €13,940 was spent on the “temporary fully operational security solution” while a more permanent €1.4 million security hut was under construction.

Temporary Gate Flaws and Delays

The Department of Public Expenditure stated that the Office of Public Works (OPW) deemed the temporary gate necessary to maintain security during the construction of the new pavilion. However, Mr. Tóibín criticized the expense and design flaws of the gate.

“Not only was it extremely expensive, but it was incredibly flawed — once a person exited the turnstile with their fob, nobody could enter in the opposite direction for a period of a few minutes,” he explained. “In some cases, this delayed TDs from getting to Dáil votes on time.”

Mr. Tóibín suggested the issues with the temporary gate might have contributed to its swift removal.

Criticism of Security Hut and Spending

The Aontú leader expressed frustration at the department’s three-week delay in responding to his parliamentary question and questioned the rationale behind the expensive security hut.

“It’s amazing to think that another solution — a turnstile gate — was not considered as a permanent alternative to the hut,” he stated. “The gate they purchased was far too expensive.”

Mr. Tóibín accused the OPW of “incinerating taxpayer money for the sake of gimmicks for TDs.”

Transparency and Accountability

The Department of Public Expenditure’s response to Mr. Tóibín’s parliamentary question provides further details about the cost breakdown of the temporary security gate, which included installation, electrical wiring, and integration with fire and security systems.

This incident raises important questions about the transparency and accountability of public spending and the need for careful consideration of cost-effective solutions.
