Tesla Model Y Crowned 2026 Drive Car of the Year, a First for a Chinese-Built Vehicle
The Tesla Model Y has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Drive Car of the Year, marking a significant milestone as the first vehicle built in China to receive the overall honor. The announcement, made on February 23, 2026, recognizes the Model Y’s blend of practicality, value, and innovative technology, solidifying Tesla’s position in the Australian automotive market.
First Overall Win for Tesla
This win represents Tesla’s first overall victory in the 21-year history of the Drive Car of the Year award. Previously, only one fully electric vehicle had claimed the top spot. The Model Y also secured the title of best electric vehicle under $60,000, surpassing category winners such as the BMW 5-Series, BYD Atto 2 and Dolphin Essential, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Tasman, Volvo XC90, and Zeekr 7X to claim the overall title.
Key Factors in the Model Y’s Success
According to James Ward, Drive content director, the Car of the Year award is given to the vehicle that “moves the game forward the most for Australian new-car buyers.” Judges specifically highlighted the Model Y’s future-focused technology as the deciding factor.
The 2026 Tesla Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive is priced from $58,900 before on-road costs and features a 60kWh battery, delivering a range of up to 466 kilometers. The vehicle’s spacious interior offers up to 971 liters of cargo space and ample headroom for passengers. Improvements from the Juniper update have also enhanced the Model Y’s ride quality, and the addition of a backlit LED tail light provides a more refined aesthetic.
Expanding the EV Ecosystem
Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, now accessible to owners of all electric vehicles, further contributes to the Model Y’s appeal in the Australian market. The availability of the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) driver assistance package, offered as a monthly subscription for $149, also played a role in the judges’ decision.
Warranty and Sales Performance
Tesla recently extended its vehicle warranty to five years, with an eight-year, 160,000-kilometer warranty on the battery and drive unit. The Model Y was already Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle in 2025, and these enhancements are expected to further solidify its position in the market.
