Thailand’s Bhumjaithai and Pheu Thai Parties Form Coalition Government

Bangkok – Thailand’s Bhumjaithai Party, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, has secured a coalition deal with the Pheu Thai Party, paving the way for a new government following the February 8 general election. The agreement, announced on February 13, 2026, is expected to provide a clear parliamentary majority and bring political stability to the nation.

Election Results and Coalition Dynamics

The Bhumjaithai Party achieved a significant victory in the February 8 election, securing 193 seats in the 500-member House of Representatives. The People’s Party followed with 118 seats, while Pheu Thai, backed by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, obtained 74 seats [Reuters]. The addition of Pheu Thai’s support gives Anutin a clear parliamentary majority.

Previous Coalition and Recent Political Shifts

This coalition marks a return to cooperation between the two parties. Bhumjaithai was previously part of a Pheu Thai-led coalition that took power after the 2023 election, but withdrew in June 2025 following a leaked phone call involving then-Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen [Reuters]. Paetongtarn Shinawatra was subsequently removed from office by a court order, creating the opportunity for Anutin to become prime minister.

Snap Election and Nationalist Surge

Anutin dissolved Parliament in December 2025, triggering a snap election. His party’s victory was fueled by a surge in nationalism following border conflicts with Cambodia [Reuters], [South China Morning Post].

Looking Ahead

Anutin has expressed a desire to move forward from past disagreements, stating, “Please erase any misunderstandings from the past.” [Reuters]. The coalition, bolstered by support from other parties, currently holds 272 seats, and discussions are ongoing with the Kla Tham party, which won an estimated 58 seats, to potentially expand the coalition further [The Diplomat]. This new government is poised to address the challenges facing Thailand and usher in a period of stability after recent political turbulence.
