The National Institute of Statistics (INE) has completed this Friday the publication of the 2021 Population and Housing Censuses with information on households and dwellings. One of the items that he has released refers to the number of empty homes in Spain, which he has estimated at around 3.8 million, the equivalent of 14,4% of the total park (26,623,708 homes).
What does the INE consider as empty housing?
As explained by the agency, for the purposes of the 2021 Census, it has chosen to consider as empty housing that which does not have an electricity supply contract or whose Total consumption registered in the previous year has been less than that of an average home of that same municipality it would have if it were occupied for 15 days throughout the year.
How have you classified the homes according to their electricity consumption?
Firstly, the entity explains that the determination of specific thresholds for each municipality is due to the fact that average consumption varies greatly by climatic zone, being generally higher in areas with hot summers.
