The former dictator of Surinam Desi Bouterse, who was sentenced last month to 20 years in prison for him murder of fifteen opponents politicians in 1982, has disappeared after not turning himself in to the authorities on Friday as planned.
His wife, Ingrid Bouterse-Waldring, He declared to the press that he did not know where he was and stated firmly: “He’s not going to jail!”
“I have not seen him or spoken to him for a few days,” he said while attacking the judicial authorities for the conviction, alleging that it had been issued for political motives.
Authorities on Wednesday ordered Bouterse, and four other people convicted in the case, to report to different prisons by Friday. Only three have done it. Their health was delicate and they walked slowly towards the entrance of the prison while journalists followed them.
Bouterse, de 78 years old, had not yet appeared by late Friday afternoon, prompting prosecutors to issue a one-sentence statement saying they were investigating those who had not shown up to jail.
