"The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All": Kadokawa Unveils Anime Adaptation
Manga fans have reason to celebrate! Kadokawa has officially greenlit an anime adaptation of Sumiko Arai’s beloved romantic comedy, “The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All” (originally titled “Ki ni Natteru Hito ga Otoko Janakatta”). The announcement, made through an emotionally charged reveal video, has sent ripples of excitement through online communities.
Arai’s manga, serialized on pixiv Comic, unveils a captivating tale of Aya, a cheerful high schooler hopelessly enamored with a mysterious CD shop employee who seems to embody everything she desires – a magnetic personality, an impeccable sense of style, and a taste for music that perfectly mirrors her own. Unbeknownst to Aya, the object of her affection is actually her classmate, Mitsuki, a reserved individual who occupies the seat next to her.
As Mitsuki grapples with keeping her true identity a secret, the story unfolds with a delicate blend of romantic tension, heartwarming friendship, and personal growth. The manga explores complex themes of self-discovery and the often-unclear boundaries between admiration and love.
Yen Press handles English licensing for the manga, recently releasing the second volume on February 18, 2024.
This delightful adaptation comes after the manga’s impressive run in Japan. It achieved phenomenal success, securing the second spot on the highly coveted 23rd annual Da Vinci "Book of the Year" list and earning a top ranking for female readers in Takarajimasha’s "Kono Manga ga Sugoi!" (This Manga Is Amazing!) guidebook.
While details on the anime adaptation, including the studio, release date, and voice cast, remain under wraps for now, fans eagerly await further announcements. This promising project is poised to captivate audiences worldwide with its relatable characters, charming premise, and heartwarming exploration of identity and connection.
