Measles No Longer eliminated in the Americas

In 2025, measles cases on the American continent surged to 30 times the number reported in all of 2024. This explosion of infections has notably impacted North America, with Canada at the epicenter. An outbreak there, beginning in October 2024, has resulted in over 5,000 infections and three deaths.

this alarming increase led the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to revoke America’s status as a measles-free region – a significant setback after the continent had twice previously eradicated the disease.

A Loss of Progress

“Very good health goals had been achieved, and today that hard and insistent work of years is lost,” explains Luis Delpiano, a pediatric infectious disease specialist and academic at the University of Chile, in an interview with DW.

Delpiano hopes the PAHO decision will effectively “manage, motivate, and articulate different public health policies regarding controlling the disease, preventing new cases, and returning to the previous state, where measles was a controlled and immunopreventable disease in america.”

Widespread Infections

The Canadian outbreak isn’t isolated. Mexico (23 deaths), the United States (3 deaths), and Bolivia are also experiencing numerous cases, increasing the risk of further spread throughout the region.

Will Mexico Be Next?

Dr. Rodrigo Romero, coordinator of the Mexican Vaccinology Association, warns that Mexico faces a real threat. He explains to DW that “the virus is already present and being transmitted in the region, whereas before – when it was eliminated – only imported cases arrived from other parts of the world.”

Key Takeaways

  • Measles cases in the Americas have dramatically increased in 2025, leading to the loss of measles-free status.
  • Canada is currently experiencing a significant outbreak with over 5,000 infections and three deaths.
  • Mexico, the United states, and Bolivia are also reporting numerous cases, raising concerns about regional spread.
  • PAHO’s decision to revoke the measles-free status aims to revitalize public health efforts to control and prevent the disease.

The resurgence of measles underscores the critical importance of vaccination programs and ongoing surveillance to protect public health. Continued collaboration between countries and a renewed commitment to immunization are essential to regain control of this highly contagious and possibly dangerous disease in the Americas.
