Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to Reunite for New ‘Mummy’ Film in 2028
After a two-decade hiatus, Universal Pictures is resurrecting The Mummy franchise with the return of original stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The fourth installment, simply titled The Mummy 4, is slated for release on May 19, 2028.
Weisz Confirmed to Join Fraser
Rachel Weisz, who starred in the first two Mummy films (The Mummy in 1999 and The Mummy Returns in 2001), will reprise her role as Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan. Her return was subtly confirmed by director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who stated, “Rachel [Weisz] is in this one,” in response to questions about the film’s continuity with the earlier installments [Collider].
Fraser’s Perspective on the Third Film
Brendan Fraser previously expressed a complex view of the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). He explained that the film was partially influenced by NBC’s broadcast rights to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing [The Wrap]. “NBC had the rights to broadcast the Olympics that year,” Fraser told the Associated Press. “So they put two together and we went to China.” Despite this, he maintained pride in the film as a standalone adventure [The Wrap].
Fraser also indicated his long-held desire to revisit the character, stating, “But the one I wanted to craft is forthcoming. And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call.” [The Wrap]
Radio Silence to Direct
The film will be directed by the filmmaking duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively known as Radio Silence. They are known for their operate on horror films such as Ready or Not, Abigail, and the recent Scream installments [Deadline]. Gillett emphasized their intention to balance their signature style with respect for the franchise’s legacy, aiming to avoid being “nostalgia bait” even as still delivering something fresh [Collider].
Production Details
David Coggeshall wrote the script for The Mummy 4. Sean Daniel, who produced the original three Mummy films and the 2017 reboot, is returning as a producer alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment [Geek Tyrant]. Fraser will also serve as an executive producer [Geek Tyrant].
