A Beacon of Hope: Cairo University Surgeons Perform Landmark Open-Heart Surgery on Young Palestinian Child
A historic medical achievement has taken place at Cairo University’s Japanese Abu Al-Rish Hospital, offering a beacon of hope for children battling complex heart conditions like Fallot’s tetralogy. The hospital’s team of renowned specialists successfully performed the first open-heart surgery on 18-month-old Al-Walid Ahmed Al-Waleed from Gaza, demonstrating unwavering commitment to medical excellence and humanitarian aid.
The delicate five-hour procedure, conducted in the specialised Heart Surgery Unit and the Children’s Surprise ward, involved a carefully orchestrated collaboration between Dr. Tariq Salah, Professor of Cardiology and Chest at Cairo University’s Faculty of Medicine; Dr. John Fouad, Cardio and Chest Surgery Specialist; and Dr. Ahmed Haddad, Professor of Anesthesia at the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University.
Following the surgery, young Al-Walid was transferred to the dedicated care of the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit, overseen by Dr. Amal Al-Sisi, Professor of Pediatrics and Head of the Pediatric Heart Unit. Within three days, after rigorous monitoring and treatment, he was moved to a private room to continue his recovery under the watchful eye of Dr. Rasha Jamal, Hospital Director.
The successful surgery highlights the unwavering dedication of Cairo University hospitals to providing comprehensive healthcare, particularly during times of crisis. "Cairo University hospitals, under the leadership of Dr. Hossam Salah, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Hospitals Board of Directors, are committed to providing healthcare to Palestinians, especially in times of need," said Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel-sadiq, President of Cairo University. “This achievement is a testament to Egypt’s unwavering support for its brothers in Gaza."
Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Hossam Salah emphasised the hospital’s commitment to providing compassionate care to all patients. "The Qasr Al-Aini palace consistently rises to the occasion, leading the national medical scene in humanitarian services, and offering hope and the highest caliber of treatment,” he stated.
This remarkable feat of medical expertise not only brings joy and relief to Al-Walid and his family but also serves as a symbol of hope for children in Gaza facing complex heart conditions. The surgery exemplifies the exceptional skills and dedication of the medical professionals at Cairo University’s hospitals, while strengthening the bond of support between Egypt and Palestine.
