The National Committee for the Prevention of Smoking (CNPT) has criticized the attitude of the Councilor for Public Health and Citizen Security of Valladolid, Alberto Cuadrado Toquero (VOX)which has distributed more than 7,000 portable ashtrays during the city’s patron saint festivities to raise awareness about how cigarette butts should be disposed of and raise awareness about dirt and environmental problems.

The initiative, which is part of the agreement between the council and the tobacco platform, Mesa del Tabaco, has not taken long to receive criticism from the CNPT: “We are very surprised by this measure because tobacco is promoted and surely vaping too and the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is breached which was signed by 182 parties, including Spain. The tobacco industry is behind this measure,” Andrés Zamorano, president of the Committee, tells this medium.

Zamorano also explains that this measure that has now been publicized by a VOX councilor is not criticized because it came from that formation, since “there have been other municipal governments, very wrong, those who have had the coconut eaten by the Tobacco Table; It must be said that the industry is behind it.”

The president of the CNPT recalls that “No municipal, regional or national authority can collaborate with the Tobacco Table doing this type of advertising. What they do is a whitewashing of the image using the soil, the rivers and the sea as an excuse. But in reality what they say is ‘go ahead with your consumption’. Budget that goes to those agreements must be dedicated to prevention and control of smoking”.
