Brian Connolly was a rock star and the irresistible leader of the successful group The Sweet.
After the great success of The Ballroom Blitzit’s celebrity and its wealth seemed unstoppable in the 1970s.
But the last chapter of his life is a tragedy that many have never heard of.
The charming singer
As a singer of the Glam rock group The Sweet, Brian Connolly seemed to have everything for him. The group dominated the 1970s, occurring in front of immense crowds around the world and leading the luxurious life that goes hand in hand with fame.Fans loved them – boys and girls – and their music still resonates decades later. Mick Tucker was considered one of the best drummers of the time, and Brian’s voice coudl electrify any scene.
The Sweet emerged in the mid -1970s, a golden age for rock. Groups like Queen, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith invaded the world. But Sweet had everything for him: talent, charisma and a series of success. They are also one of the few British groups to have broken in the American charts.

Everyone knows Ballroom Blitz – Chaotic energy, the emblematic intro of drums, electrifying guitars – but Sweet was much more than a group of glam rock. They had the heaviness of Deep Purple, the attitude of the Rolling Stones and the hooks of the Beatles. Set Me Free could easily have appeared on a disc of judas Priest, while Sweet F.A. had the raw aggressiveness of the first AC/DC.
At the top of their glory, Sweet has sold 50 million records worldwide.
And in the center of all this was Brian connolly. The charming frontman, with his striking appearance and his imposing presence on stage, has become the group’s face. He had the world at his feet, millions of fans and the voice that defined an era. But as the story will show, fame and fortune could not protect it from the darkest side of the celebrity of rock.

However, his health didn’t allow him to keep up with the demanding schedule. During a tour of Australia in 1990,he was hospitalized for dehydration, and it became clear he could no longer handle the stress of touring.
Legal disputes over the band’s name also hurt The sweet’s finances. Eventually, the band split into two groups: Brian Connolly’s Sweet and Andy Scott’s Sweet.
Connolly kept touring, but the concerts only earned a small amount compared to his earlier success, and his health continued to worsen.
