The WHO warns of five contaminated Pharmix syrups

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of the presence of contaminated syrups and suspension medications that have been identified in the American continent, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific.

This WHO alert refers to five syrups and suspension drugs initially detected in Maldives y Pakistan and notified to the entity on November 8. Some of the affected products have also been detected in Belicelas Fiji Islands y Laos.

The five products are syrup’Allergy‘, the suspension ‘Emidone‘, the syrup ‘Mucorid‘, the suspension ‘Ulcofin‘and the syrup’Zincell‘. A total of 23 lots of these products are affected. The declared manufacturer of all affected products is Pakistan-based Pharmix Laboratories (Pvt) Ltd.

Last November, the quality control laboratory of the Maldives Food and Drugs Authority (MFDA) analyzed samples of five different batches of ‘Alergo’ syrup. The routine examination detected “potentially unacceptable amounts” of diethyleneglycol y ethylene glycol that contaminated the drugs.

Laboratory testing by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration confirmed that all five batches were contaminated with ethylene glycol at levels ranging from 0.62 to 0.82% w/w (percent/weight) relative to accepted levels. , whose limit must exceed 0.10% p/p.
