A Day in the Life of an IBD Nurse Specialist
Every morning, I start my day with a big cup of coffee. It’s essential fuel to power through my 50-minute commute from Clonakilty to CUH.
Morning Routine and Case Management
After parking offsite, I enjoy a 15-minute walk to work. It’s a great way to clear my head and plan my day ahead.
As an IBD nurse specialist, a significant part of my role is preventing hospital admissions for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Much of my work is virtual, starting with reviewing patient queries received through emails, texts, and phone calls. I then prioritize my caseload and address each patient concern.
Clinic Consultations and Patient Education
By 9 am, clinic starts. We see a variety of patients, including those newly diagnosed with IBD, those undergoing treatment, and those coming in for follow-up reviews.
We can see anywhere between 50 to 80 patients on a typical day, a mix of virtual consultations and in-person visits. A key part of our role is educating patients about IBD. This chronic condition can significantly impact a person’s life, and we strive to help them live their best lives while addressing any embarrassment or concerns they may have regarding their bowel health.
Taking a Break
I try to squeeze in a quick walk during my lunch break to recharge.
Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration
After clinic time, our multidisciplinary IBD team meets to discuss complex cases and develop personalized treatment plans. We often review patient responses to medications and consider adjustments to their regimen. Fortunately, we have very effective medications available nowadays, and typically outpatients visit us for reviews every six months.
Sharing Knowledge as a Podcast Contributor
As secretary of the IBD Nurses Association of Ireland, I dedicate time to respond to emails and stay connected with the wider IBD community. I recently enjoyed representing the association on janssenwithme.ie/gutcast, the first Irish podcast specifically for people living with IBD. Developed by Crohn’s and Colitis Ireland (CCI) and Johnson & Johnson, brings together healthcare professionals and individuals with IBD to provide practical advice and valuable information.
You can access the online at janssenwithme.ie/gutcast , as well as on the Apple Podcast App and Spotify.
Finishing the Day
Finally, as I wrap up my workday, I enjoy the return journey home.
