Threads to Get a Major Update: Customizable Display Names and More

Threads, the popular Instagram-linked microblogging app, is set for a significant update in 2025. According to app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, the new feature will allow users to add a separate display name specifically for Threads, breaking away from the need to replicate their Instagram handle.

As shown in this example shared by Alessandro Paluzzi, Threads users will have the option to choose a distinct display name for their profile and posts. This change allows for greater personalization and identity separation between Threads and Instagram.

Users will be able to change their display name up to twice within a 14-day period. Importantly, these changes will only be reflected within Threads, keeping your Instagram username intact.

Threads Moving Towards Independence

Since its launch, Threads has been heavily tied to Instagram, leveraging its user base and existing connections. While this strategy has been successful in accelerating Threads’ growth, it has also led to some challenges. Some users find that Threads recommendations based solely on their Instagram activity aren’t always relevant to their interests within the new platform.

The independent display name feature suggests Threads is moving towards greater autonomy. As the platform matures and gathers its own usage data, it can potentially establish its own internal interest graph, reducing reliance on Instagram signals for recommendations. This separation could ultimately offer a more personalized and tailored experience for users.

“Threads has, in fact, already started to move in this direction, with Instagram chief Adam Mosseri announcing back in November that Threads no longer uses your IG activity to fuel its “Who to follow” recommendations for new users.”

The move towards independent display names is a significant step in this direction. It allows users to create a distinct identity within Threads while still benefiting from the connectivity to their Instagram network.

With over 300 million active users and continuously growing, Threads has established itself as a formidable contender in the social media landscape. Updates like the customizable display name option and the shift towards independent recommendations highlight Threads’ commitment to evolving and catering to its user base. As the platform continues to innovate, it will be interesting to see how it further differentiates itself and shapes the future of social interaction.
