Ohio’s New Law Requires Schools to Notify Parents About Student Name/Pronoun Changes

Ohio schools are now required to notify parents if a student requests to change their name or pronouns, under a new law that went into effect earlier this month.

house Bill 68, signed by Governor Mike DeWine in June, mandates that school districts inform parents in writing within 10 days of a student’s request. The law applies to students of all ages.

The legislation has sparked significant debate, with supporters arguing it reinforces parental rights and ensures parents are involved in their children’s lives. Opponents, though, express concerns about the potential harm to transgender and non-binary students who may not be safe or accepted at home.

The law outlines specific requirements for school districts, including a process for documenting parental notification and addressing situations where a student fears for their safety if their parents are informed. Schools are also required to develop policies regarding restroom and locker room access based on a student’s sex assigned at birth.

Several school districts are currently navigating how to implement the new law while balancing the needs of all students and adhering to legal obligations. Legal challenges to the law are also anticipated.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more data becomes available.
