TIFF Announces Summer Retrospective for Christopher Nolan and Upcoming Animation Showcase
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has unveiled its latest programming slate, featuring a deep dive into the filmography of one of modern cinema’s most influential directors. The summer marquee series, titled “Christopher Nolan: Grand Designs,” will take over the TIFF Lightbox from July 8 through August 20, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience the Oscar-winning director’s work on the substantial screen.

A Journey Through Nolan’s Filmography
The retrospective is set to showcase all 12 of Christopher Nolan’s feature films. The lineup includes:
- Following (1998)
- Memento (2000)
- Insomnia (2002)
- Batman Begins (2005)
- The Prestige (2006)
- The Dark Knight (2008)
- Inception (2010)
- The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
- Interstellar (2014)
- Dunkirk (2017)
- Tenet (2020)
- Oppenheimer (2023)
According to TIFF, many of these screenings will be presented in 35mm and 70mm formats, staying true to Nolan’s well-known commitment to celluloid. To launch the series, The Ringer and Spotify’s The Big Picture will host a live recording of their podcast at the Lightbox. While the retrospective celebrates his career, the director is not expected to be in attendance.
The series also includes a nod to the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon of 2023, with a “quote-along” screening of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie scheduled to run immediately before the July 18 screening of Oppenheimer. The program will feature a presentation of Philip Kaufman’s The Right Stuff, a film Nolan has previously identified as a personal favorite.
Expanding Horizons: Japanese Anime at TIFF
Looking beyond the summer, TIFF has also announced a marquee series dedicated to Japanese animation. Titled “Drawn Universes: Visions in Animation,” the showcase is curated by acclaimed auteur Masaaki Yuasa. Scheduled for November and December 2026, the series aims to highlight both the pioneers of the genre and the contemporary creators driving its current global surge.

“As I begin shaping the lineup, I am excited to look back at the works that sparked my own imagination from a young age and to curate a series with a focus on the artists who have defined the genre,” Yuasa stated regarding the upcoming project.
Curating the Future of Film
For TIFF’s leadership, these programs represent a strategic effort to engage audiences with both historical titans and evolving art forms. Anita Lee, chief programming officer at TIFF, noted that the Lightbox series was designed to highlight artists and ideas that shape the popular imagination. Regarding the Nolan retrospective, Lee described the director’s work as a “cultural event,” while emphasizing that anime continues to emerge as a significant force in global entertainment.
