‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ Ushers in a Latest Era for the Shelby Saga

The long-awaited cinematic finale to the Peaky Blinders saga, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, is now in theaters and streaming on Netflix, marking both an ending and an escalation for Tommy Shelby and his family. The film, set in 1940 amidst the backdrop of World War II, delivers bigger stakes and a final reckoning for the Shelby empire.

A Film Years in the Making

Creator Steven Knight revealed that the idea for a film conclusion was present from the very beginning of the series. “After the very first series… I said, ‘I’m going to take this up to the Second World War and it’s going to be a movie at the conclude,’” Knight stated. Despite the series’ success, Knight emphasized the demand for the film to justify its existence, building upon the depth established over six seasons.

New Antagonists and a Reshaped Villain

Tim Roth joins the cast as John Beckett, treasurer of the British Union of Fascists, a new antagonist in the Peaky Blinders universe. Roth’s involvement came about through a direct invitation from Cillian Murphy, who simply texted, “Do you want to make a movie?” Roth initially hadn’t watched the series but agreed to the role, later collaborating with the filmmakers to reshape his character into a more unsettling figure, describing him as resembling “a sort of school teacher… very reasonable and very nice until the mask comes off.” He believes this grounded approach feels “more appropriate… in these times.”

A Focus on Physical Realism

Director Tom Harper prioritized physical realism in the film’s production, particularly in action sequences. He recalled a brutal fight scene on the first day of filming where the conditions became incredibly challenging. “The mud turned into like a swimming pool… the pigs busted through… and it was day one of filming,” Harper said. He emphasized the importance of portraying action that “feels real, that feels painful, because they’re humans. They’re not superheroes.”

Tommy Shelby’s Unending Story

Despite the culmination of the story, Knight made it clear that Tommy Shelby’s journey is far from over. “Tommy Shelby don’t retire,” he affirmed, hinting at the character’s enduring presence.
