Tipperary Legend Conor Sweeney Retires From Intercounty Football

Tipperary GAA has bid farewell to a true legend as former All-Star Conor Sweeney has announced his retirement from intercounty football at the age of 34.

Sweeney’s journey with Tipperary began in 2010, making his championship debut against Laois. Over the next decade, he ascended to become one of the most formidable forwards in the country.

Leading the Premier County to a Historic Victory

In 2020, Sweeney etched his name in Tipperary history. Captaining the team in the iconic green and white colours, he led them to their first Munster Senior Football title since 1935 with a stunning victory over Cork. His standout performances throughout that championship earned him the prestigious All-Star award, making him the third Premier footballer to receive the honour after Declan Browne and Michael Quinlivan.

A Legacy of Success

Sweeney’s trophy cabinet is a testament to his excellence. It boasts a Munster U-21 football championship in 2010, Allianz Football League Division 4 and Division 3 League titles in 2014 and 2017 respectively, and a memorable 2-02 haul in Tipperary’s stunning 2016 All-Ireland quarter-final victory against Galway.

“After 15 years playing senior football for Tipperary, I feel now is the right time to step away and retire from intercounty football,” Sweeney said in a heartfelt statement. “I feel truly honoured and privileged to have represented my county and I have genuinely loved every minute of my time in the blue and gold, and green and white.”

Sweeney expressed his gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, and management team, particularly mentioning the late Liam Kearns and Pat O’Callaghan for their profound influence on his career.

Tipperary GAA lauded Sweeney as one of the greatest ambassadors for football the county had known.
