Kerry Injury Complications Mounting Ahead of Opening Munster SFC Defence

All-Ireland champions Kerry face significant injury concerns as they prepare for their Munster Senior Football Championship semi-final clash against Clare in Ennis on Saturday, April 25, 2026. Despite being 1/40-on favourites to advance, the Kingdom’s preparation has been hampered by multiple fitness issues affecting key personnel.

Midfielder Joe O’Connor continues to manage a plantar fasciitis issue and did not participate in field activities during the team’s overseas training camp in the Algarve. Although he undertook gym work while wearing a protective boot, he is not expected to be ready for the Ennis encounter.

Complicating matters further, Glenbeigh midfielder Liam Smith has sustained a serious hamstring injury that could rule him out for the remainder of the championship. His absence adds to Kerry’s midfield challenges ahead of the provincial opener.

Dingle’s Barry Dan O’Sullivan, who has been out for a year with a knee ligament tear, has been recalled to the panel to provide midfield cover. Similarly, Diarmuid O’Connor has returned to the squad but remains short on match preparation following his layoff.

Sean O’Shea, one of Kerry’s key lieutenants, is also a major doubt for Saturday’s game after suffering an ankle injury during the Algarve training camp. His availability remains uncertain as the team approaches the Munster SFC semi-final.

Sean O’Brien, who featured in last year’s All-Ireland final alongside Mark O’Shea, is struggling to return from an injury sustained in an Armagh League game. He did not play in Kerry’s recent challenge match against Down, further highlighting the squad’s fitness concerns.

Despite these setbacks, Kerry management remains confident in their ability to field a competitive side. The experience and depth within the panel are expected to mitigate the impact of the absences, even as the team navigates a disrupted build-up to their title defence.

The Munster SFC semi-final between Kerry and Clare is scheduled for Saturday evening in Ennis, with the winner advancing to the provincial final.
