Toronto Blue Jays Clear Roster Spot as Free Agency Opens
Eight players from the Toronto Blue Jays officially hit the open market last week as baseball’s off-season shifts into gear, with club decisions looming on qualifying offers, contract options, and 40-man roster management. Sportsnet.ca reported that Shane Bieber, Patrick Corbin, Yimi Garcia, Max Scherzer, Paul Sewald, George Springer, Jameson Taillon, and Luis Urias are among the 155 players now available on the open market.

Roster Decisions and Option Deadlines
Alongside those departures, the front office cleared a 40-man roster spot by outrighting outfielder Rudy Martin Jr. to triple-A. Monday marks the fifth day following the World Series, bringing the league-wide deadline for qualifying offer decisions, the mandatory reinstatement of all players from the 60-day injured list, and the official opening of free agency at 5 p.m. ET. None of Toronto’s departing free agents qualify for the $23.15-million qualifying offer, as Kevin Gausman is ineligible having already received one previously and been traded mid-season.

The Blue Jays also face a decision on an $8-million team option for Myles Straw, which carries a $1.75-million buyout. Straw’s production dropped off this past season, but he remains a useful fourth outfielder and a good clubhouse presence, though an $8-million price tag is steep for his role.
Managing the 40-Man Crunch
With the 60-day injured list expiring on Monday, teams can no longer exceed the 40-man roster limit. Toronto will reinstate Jose Berrios, Jake Bloss, Bowden Francis, Cody Ponce, Addison Barger, Jonathan Clase, and Anthony Santander, bringing their total count to 39 players.

International Markets and Upcoming Dates
The end of the quiet period opens the door for negotiations with major free agents like Tarik Skubal, Randy Arozarena, and Seiya Suzuki, alongside minor-league free agency. Additionally, posting windows have officially opened for three Japanese standouts: infielder-outfielder Teruaki Sato and right-handers Kaima Taira and Hiromi Itoh, who carry a Dec. 1 signing deadline.
Following Monday’s free agency opening, players have 10 days to decide on qualifying offers. The Blue Jays must then add Rule 5 eligible players to their 40-man rosters by Nov. 17, tender arbitration-eligible players contracts by Nov. 20, and prepare for potential labor turbulence ahead of the 2027 season opener scheduled for March 25 against the Yankees.
