Toronto FC Makes Landmark Signing: Josh Sargent Joins as Designated Player
Toronto FC has officially announced the signing of United States international forward Josh Sargent from Norwich City FC of the English Football League (EFL) Championship. The 26-year-old will join the club as a Designated Player through the 2030-31 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, marking a significant investment in the team’s future.
A Substantial Transfer
The transfer includes the acquisition of St. Louis City SC’s right of first refusal (ROFR) for Sargent in exchange for $500,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) – $250,000 in 2026 GAM and $250,000 in 2027 GAM – and up to an additional $225,000 in conditional GAM based on performance metrics. MLS Soccer reports the transfer fee is around $22 million, potentially rising to $27 million with add-ons.
Club Leadership Praises the Acquisition
Toronto FC General Manager Jason Hernandez expressed his excitement about the signing, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Josh to Toronto FC as a foundational piece of what we have been building here at the club since last summer. He brings high-level experience in some of the strongest leagues in the world and international pedigree at just 26 years old. He is a proven goalscorer, with a winning mentality and the intelligence that will lead our attack for years to reach.”
MLSE President & CEO Keith Pelley added, “When TFC took its most essential steps to rebuild the club into a perennial contender last summer, the priority was to build a team with championship talent on the pitch, but just as importantly, to add the right leadership and experience required to create a winning culture and chemistry. Josh Sargent is a world-class player and person and his addition marks an important step forward in our work to deliver a second MLS Cup championship to our supporters and city.”
Sargent’s European and International Career
Sargent joins TFC after five seasons with Norwich City in the EFL Championship, where he established himself as a key attacking player. He has a total of 56 goals and 15 assists in 157 appearances for the club. Sportsnet notes he had eight goals this season alone.
Prior to his time in England, Sargent spent two and a half years with German club SV Werder Bremen, registering 15 goals and nine assists in 83 games. He made his debut with Bremen in December 2018, scoring with his first touch – the fastest goal by a debutant in club history.
On the international stage, Sargent has earned 29 caps with the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), scoring five goals. He was part of the U.S. Squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, featuring in all three group stage matches. Toronto FC’s official announcement highlights his early international success, becoming the second-youngest player to score on his USMNT debut in 2018.
Sargent’s Personal Statement
“I am excited to join Toronto FC and start a new chapter in my life with my family in Toronto,” said Sargent. “I am grateful to everyone at the club for their belief in me and all the support throughout the process to make this move possible. From the initial conversations with Toronto FC, what excited me the most about the project was the ambition to be a competitive and winning team. I can’t wait to hit the ground running and play in front of all the fans at BMO Field.”
