French Savate Boxing: Rising Stars and Championship Updates
Savate, likewise known as French Boxing or French Foot Fighting, is gaining momentum with promising performances from young athletes in recent competitions. This French martial art, combining boxing techniques with diverse kicking styles, continues to evolve and attract dedicated practitioners.
Recent Championship Successes
The Torreilles Savate boxing academy club has celebrated significant achievements in recent qualifying events. Athletes Zoé Boesser and Ava Tribou have both secured victories, advancing them to the next stages of the French championships.
Zoé Boesser Qualifies for French Cadet Championship
Zoé Boesser successfully qualified for the French Cadet Championship in Gaillac. She will compete in the Final Phases scheduled for Saturday, May 2nd and Sunday, May 3rd.
Ava Tribou Advances in French Elite A Championship
Ava Tribou achieved a unanimous victory in the quarter-finals of the French Elite A championship. She is now preparing for the semi-final competition in Beaumont on Saturday, March 14th.
Understanding Savate
Savate distinguishes itself from other martial arts like kickboxing by exclusively utilizing kicks with the feet. As defined by Wikipedia, practitioners, known as “tireurs” (male) and “tireuses” (female), are required to wear footwear during competitions. The art also has a “street” version – Savate de rue – which incorporates a wider range of techniques, including knee and elbow strikes, joint locks, and throws.
Savate in Regional Competitions
The sport is actively promoted through regional and national events. According to L’Indépendant, the Savate boxe académie club hosted the Departmental Championship 3rd series in Torreilles, attracting eight clubs and 39 licensed participants in December 2025. Other champions from this event included Tom Boesser (Benjamin), Jules Toubert and Eduardo Sousa-Bessa (minimes), and Julien Frezoul (senior).
Global Savate Activity
Savate is also gaining international recognition. The Fédération Internationale de Savate (FISav) hosted the Qualifying heats and Junior Finals of the 2025 World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, in July 2025, with over 250 athletes participating. The 2025 African Savate Championship was also held in Senegal in April 2025.
The Growing Popularity of Savate
As highlighted by CBC News, Savate is often described as a cousin of kickboxing and is attracting increasing interest, with Montreal gyms sending athletes to the World Championships and achieving medal success.
The continued success of athletes like Zoé Boesser and Ava Tribou, coupled with the growing international presence of Savate, suggests a bright future for this dynamic and challenging martial art.
