AI-Powered Photo Editing in Google Photos: Transparency is Key
We all love a good photo, and many of us edit our images to enhance them. Cropping, removing distractions, perfecting lighting, or even creating entirely new compositions are all common edits. Traditionally, these tasks could be time-consuming and complex, but AI has revolutionized the process, powering impressive editing tools like Magic Editor and Magic Eraser in Google Photos.
Responsible AI: Guiding Our Approach
As we make these powerful AI-powered editing tools accessible to more users, we prioritize responsible development and usage. Our AI Principles serve as our guiding star, ensuring ethical and transparent practices.
Enhanced Transparency: Seeing AI Edits in Google Photos
To further enhance transparency, we’re making it easier to identify when AI has been used in your Google Photos edits. Starting next week, you’ll see a clear indication within the Photos app whenever a photo has been edited using Google AI.
Technical Standards for AI-Edited Photos
Photos edited with tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Zoom Enhance already include metadata based on technical standards from The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC). This metadata indicates the use of generative AI in the editing process. Now, this information will be readily visible alongside details like the file name, location, and backup status in the Photos app.
