Trinity Health Faces EEOC Settlement Over Religious Discrimination

Trinity Health Grand Rapids, formerly known as Mercy Health St. Mary’s, has agreed to a $50,000 settlement with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to resolve a religious discrimination lawsuit. The case stemmed from the hospital’s denial of a religious exemption to a job applicant’s mandatory flu shot requirement.

Details of the EEOC Lawsuit

The EEOC filed the lawsuit in April 2023 on behalf of a job applicant who alleged that Trinity Health Grand Rapids arbitrarily denied their request for a religious exemption to the annual flu shot. Previously, the hospital allowed religious exemptions, but determined the applicant’s religious beliefs were “insufficient” without providing an explanation. The conditional job offer was rescinded after the exemption denial, and the applicant was not given an opportunity to address concerns regarding their request .

Violation of Title VII

The EEOC’s lawsuit alleged a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, asserting that the hospital committed religious discrimination by denying the exemption with “reckless indifference” to the applicant’s protected rights. Title VII mandates that employers provide reasonable accommodations for employees’ religious beliefs unless doing so would create an “undue hardship” for the employer .
