Trump Approves Federal Disaster Declaration for Louisiana Winter Storm
President Donald Trump has approved Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry’s request for a major disaster declaration, unlocking federal assistance for nine parishes impacted by a severe winter storm that struck North Louisiana in late January. The declaration will provide support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to Bienville, DeSoto, East Carroll, Franklin, Morehouse, Ouachita, Richland, Tensas, and West Carroll parishes.
Federal Aid to Support Recovery Efforts
The approved disaster declaration will facilitate federal funding for debris removal, emergency medical support, and the provision of essential services like temporary generators. It too covers costs associated with temporary housing and repairs to emergency infrastructure.
Storm Impact and Initial Response
The January storm caused widespread disruption across North Louisiana, leaving approximately 175,000 utility customers without power and 32,500 households without running water at its peak. Several highways, including Interstate 20, were forced to close for multiple days due to hazardous conditions.
Congressional Support and Regional Impact
U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy welcomed President Trump’s decision. Both senators, along with Louisiana’s six U.S. House members, had previously sent a letter to Trump urging increased financial support for the recovery. Similar disaster declarations were also approved by President Trump earlier in February for Mississippi and Tennessee, which experienced significant damage and power outages from the same winter storm system.
