Pritzker Demands $8.6 Billion Tariff Refund from Trump
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is demanding that former President Donald Trump refund approximately $8.6 billion to Illinois residents following the Supreme Court’s ruling against his administration’s tariffs. The demand comes after the Court determined that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not authorize the president to impose tariffs as reported by CBS News.
Supreme Court Ruling and the Demand for Refunds
The 6-3 Supreme Court decision has prompted calls for tariff refunds from businesses and governors alike. Governor Pritzker sent a letter and invoice to Mr. Trump requesting a refund of $1,700 for each of the 5,105,448 households in Illinois, totaling $8,679,261,600 according to CBS News. The invoice is marked “Past Due – Delinquent.”
Pritzker argues that the tariffs “wreaked havoc on farmers, enraged our allies, and sent grocery prices through the roof” as stated in his letter to Trump. He warned of potential further legal action if the compensation is not provided.
Other Governors Join the Call for Refunds
California Governor Gavin Newsom has also called for refunds, stating that the money raised through the tariffs came from US taxpayers and should be returned as reported by The Hill. Newsom characterized the tariffs as an “illegal cash grab” that harmed working families.
Trump’s Response and Potential Repayments
Following the Supreme Court ruling, former President Trump announced plans to impose a 10% global tariff for 150 days to replace some of the emergency duties that were struck down according to CBS News.
The scale of potential repayments is substantial. The Penn-Wharton Budget Model estimates that refunds could total $175 billion, though the process of determining who receives the money remains unclear as reported by CBS News. Former President Trump acknowledged that any refund process could take years.
Political Implications
Both Governors Pritzker and Newsom are considered potential Democratic contenders in the 2028 presidential race according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The tariff refund issue provides a platform for them to criticize the former president and appeal to voters concerned about economic issues.
The tariffs, announced in April, raised over $130 billion from importers, with a significant portion passed on to consumers through higher prices as reported by CBS News.
