Trump Threatens to Deploy ICE Agents to Airports Amid DHS Funding Impasse
President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to airports across the U.S. On Monday if Democrats do not agree to measures aimed at strengthening security and immigration enforcement. The move comes as a standoff continues over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Truth Social Posts Detail Plan
“If the Radical Left Democrats don’t immediately sign an agreement to let our Country, in particular, our Airports, be FREE and SAFE again, I will move our brilliant and patriotic ICE Agents to the Airports,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. He later added, “I look forward to moving ICE in on Monday, and have already told them to, ‘GET READY.'”
Trump stated that ICE agents would focus on “the immediate arrest of all Illegal Immigrants who have approach into our Country” and specifically mentioned targeting immigrants from Somalia, repeating previous unsubstantiated claims about their impact on Minnesota. The New York Times reported on these claims.
Political Context and DHS Shutdown
The threat to deploy ICE agents comes as Senate Republicans have blocked Democratic efforts to pass funding bills for both the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the DHS. The DHS has been partially shut down since mid-February. Politico details the ongoing political tensions.
Democrats are seeking changes to ICE’s enforcement operations, including better identification for federal law enforcement officers, a new code of conduct, and increased leverage of judicial warrants, following clashes in Minneapolis that resulted in two deaths. Republicans, yet, maintain that they demand to fund all parts of the DHS, not just specific agencies.
TSA Staffing Concerns
The potential deployment of ICE agents also occurs as the TSA faces staffing challenges, with a growing number of agents calling out sick or leaving the agency due to financial struggles caused by the government shutdown. The Hill reported that at least 366 TSA agents have quit since February 14th.
Legal Authority Questioned
The legal authority of ICE and Customs and Border Protection to create arrests without a warrant within the U.S., including at airports, is being debated. Relevant code, USC 1357, permits arrests within a reasonable distance from the border, but its application to inland locations is disputed.
Ongoing Negotiations
Despite the tensions, there are signs of progress, with stalled talks between Democrats and the White House restarting. Senators from both parties were meeting with White House officials on Saturday, and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer spoke of “productive conversations.” Senate Majority Leader John Thune urged the bipartisan group to reach a solution quickly, warning that airport lines will continue to grow if an agreement isn’t reached.
