Trump’s State of the Union Guests and Boycotts Reflect Political Divide

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night featured a guest list designed to highlight key issues and allies, while also drawing a stark contrast with those choosing to boycott the event. Several Democratic lawmakers opted to skip the address, instead attending an alternative event organized by MoveOn.org, signaling deep opposition to the President’s agenda.

Who Attended Trump’s State of the Union

President Trump invited individuals representing a range of issues, from parental rights to national security and youth empowerment.

  • Saige Blair: At the center of a lawsuit concerning parental rights and school decisions regarding gender identity in Virginia.

  • U.S. Men’s Hockey Team: Honored for winning the gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
  • George Retes: A U.S. Citizen who alleges he was pepper-sprayed and detained by federal immigration agents in California.
  • Nick Shirley: A conservative Youtuber highlighted for exposing alleged fraud and corruption in Minnesota state government.
  • Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s family: Represented by her brother and sister-in-law, they are among the visible victims of abuse by Jeffrey Epstein.
  • Jess Michaels: Invited by Rep. James Walkinshaw, D-Va., another survivor of Jeffrey Epstein.
  • Haley Robson: Invited by Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., also a survivor of Jeffrey Epstein.

Who Skipped the State of the Union

Several Democratic lawmakers chose to boycott the address, citing opposition to President Trump’s policies and rhetoric. They instead attended “The People’s State of the Union,” an event organized by MoveOn.org.

  • Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD): Described Trump as “marching America towards fascism.”
  • Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA): Attended the alternative event.
  • Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA): Stated he would not give Trump “the audience he craves for the lies that he tells.”
  • Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA): Refused to “sit and listen to that man spew lies and hate.”
  • Additional lawmakers: Sens. Ruben Gallego, Tina Smith, and Jeff Merkley; and Reps. Yassamin Ansari, Becca Balint, Greg Casar, Teresa Leger Fernandez, Maxwell Frost, Robert Garcia, Jim Himes, Sara Jacobs, Pramila Jayapal, John Larson, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Summer Lee, Chellie Pingree, Emily Randall, Mary Gay Scanlon, Delia Ramirez and Bonnie Watson Coleman also attended the alternative event.

The U.S. Women’s Olympic hockey team declined the invitation due to scheduling conflicts.

A Divided Response

The contrasting attendance lists underscore the deep political divisions within the United States. President Trump’s guest list served to amplify his supporters and highlight issues he champions, while the boycotts demonstrated a strong rebuke from those opposed to his leadership.
