Donald Trump’s trial for withholding secret documents will begin in May next year. United States District Court Judge Aileen Cannon ordered that the jury trial of the former president, Donald Trump start on May 20, 2024.
Prosecutors had asked for the trial to begin in Decemberwhile Trump’s defense lawyers had requested to do so after the November 2024 presidential election.
Trump, 77, is the favorite for the Republican presidential nomination and the trial will take place at the height of the primaries to select the party’s champion for the election.
Several press commentators pointed out that if Trump win the 2024 elections without the trial having yet taken place, he could maneuver to abort the process.
The trial will be held in the federal courts of Fort Piercea city about 200 kilometers north of Miami where Cannon is a judge, for which she was precisely nominated by Trump in 2020, when he was president.
