TSA PreCheck and Global Entry Suspended Amid Government Shutdown
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is temporarily suspending the TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs as a partial government shutdown continues, potentially causing longer wait times for travelers. The suspensions began at 6 a.m. ET on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Programs Suspended, Focus Shifts to General Travelers
TSA PreCheck allows approved passengers to utilize faster security lanes at U.S. Airports, although Global Entry expedites U.S. Customs and immigration clearance for pre-approved international travelers. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated that TSA and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are “prioritizing the general traveling population at our airports and ports of entry and suspending courtesy and special privilege escorts.”
Impact on Agencies and Personnel
In addition to suspending the expedited screening programs, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has halted all non-disaster-related responses to prioritize disaster relief efforts. TSA and CBP personnel assigned to PreCheck and Global Entry will be reassigned to assist with processing all travelers. FEMA and TSA will resume normal operations when the shutdown concludes.
Shutdown Origins and Political Fallout
The partial government shutdown began on February 14, 2026, after lawmakers failed to reach a deal on DHS funding. Democrats have been seeking changes to immigration operations, particularly concerning the actions of federal immigration agents following shootings in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Industry Concerns and Past Disruptions
Airlines for America, a trade association representing major U.S. Airlines, expressed concern that the traveling public is being used as a “political football” during the shutdown. The association noted that a similar shutdown last year resulted in losses of $6.1 billion across the travel industry and related sectors. The suspensions come at a time when over 5,000 flights have already been cancelled due to a winter storm, and just before the spring break travel season.
Criticism from Democrats
Democrats on the House Committee on Homeland Security criticized the administration’s decision, accusing them of deliberately “ruining your travel” and “kneecapping” programs that enhance travel security, and efficiency.
Previous DHS Actions During Shutdown
Prior to suspending PreCheck and Global Entry, the Trump administration had already ordered FEMA to suspend the deployment of aid workers to disaster-affected areas due to the shutdown.
