As the start of classes approaches on March 3, 2026, the government of Tucumán Province is implementing a series of measures to ensure a smooth and safe return to school for students. Governor Osvaldo Jaldo addressed key areas including school infrastructure repairs following recent heavy rainfall, transportation benefits, security operations for the “Last First Day” celebrations, and school insurance coverage.
School Repairs After Severe Rainfall
Tucumán Province has experienced unusually high rainfall in recent months. Governor Jaldo reported that as of the end of February 2026, approximately 800 millimeters of rain had fallen, nearly 50% of the annual average of 1,400 millimeters. This rainfall caused flooding, road deterioration, weed growth, and damage to school buildings, some of which were already structurally vulnerable due to age and weather exposure.
The Provincial Government, along with municipalities and communes, has prioritized repairing schools to ensure they are ready for the March 3rd start of the school year.
Student and Teacher Transportation Benefits
To ensure full student attendance, the government is prioritizing the continuation of the free student transportation ticket. Governor Jaldo emphasized the importance of ensuring all children and young people have access to education. Teachers will too receive a 50% discount on public transportation.
Security Measures for “Last First Day” Celebrations
Authorities are preparing for the “Last First Day” (Último Primer Día – UPD) celebrations with a special security operation across the province’s five regions. Chief of Police Joaquin Girvau announced a joint effort with the Ministry of Security and the IPLA, involving infantry, motorized units, and breathalyzer checkpoints. The operation aims to prevent public disturbances and underage drinking, with a message to parents about accompanying students to celebrations held in rented facilities.
Minister of Education Susana Montaldo stated that students under the influence of alcohol will not be allowed to enter school grounds, emphasizing the require to respect the educational institution and ensure students’ well-being.
Free School Insurance and Medical Certificates
The provincial government will cover the full cost of school insurance for all students, eliminating a significant expense for families. This insurance will be paid directly by the Government of the Province through the Popular Savings Bank.
the Ministry of Public Health, in coordination with the Ministry of the Interior, mayors, and community commissioners, will conduct province-wide operations to issue school medical certificates.
Tucumán as a Leader in Education
