Turkish Protests Escalate After Istanbul Mayor’s Jailing: Erdoğan Holds Opposition Accountable

Turkish Political Crisis Intensifies Amid Mayor’s Detention

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has described the ongoing protests over Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu’s detention as a “movement of violence.” He asserted that the Republican People’s Party (CHP), the mayor’s party and Erdoğan’s main political adversary, will be held accountable for the injuries to police officers and property damage. These protests have followed İmamoğlu’s detention on corruption charges, triggering widespread unrest across the nation.

Mayors detained due to alleged corruption charges have sparked the largest demonstrations in Turkey in over a decade. A court ordered Mr. İmamoğlu to remain in custody pending trial, with the mayor and his supporters rejecting the charges as politically motivated. This move has been dismissed outright by Mr. Erdoğan’s government, which insists no political intent was involved.

Unyielding Protests Despite Government Bans

Despite strict bans on street gatherings in numerous cities, thousands continue to rally in predominantly peaceful demonstrations against the government. The six-day protest wave broke records, with CHP’s leader Özgür Özel urging for nationwide continuation. In Ankara, President Erdoğan criticized the main opposition, labeling their actions as provocations.

“As a nation, we followed with surprise the events that emerged after the main opposition leader’s call… turned into a movement of violence,” Erdoğan remarked after a cabinet session. He added that the ruling party will hold the CHP accountable politically and through judicial processes for any damages incurred.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya has also accused some protesters of national security threats, citing 1,133 arrests over five days, with 123 police officers injured during the disturbances.

Government and CHP Tensions Escalate

A CHP delegation met with Istanbul’s governor to discuss police actions during the crackdown, accusing police interventions of excessive violence leading to several hospitalizations. CHP leader Özgür Çelik called for protests to continue, targeting pro-Erdoğan media, brands, and stores. At the same time, Mr. Özel challenged Erdoğan to a televised debate and emphasized maintaining order during protests.

During various protest sites such as Galata Bridge, demonstrators were met with police intervention using tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds. Despite the suppression, many have vowed to persist with their demonstrations.

Opposition’s Response to İmamoğlu’s Detention

Mr. İmamoğlu, jailed pending trial amidst a CHP presidential candidacy primary, received overwhelming support, with 15 million votes registered in his favor. Many view his detention as politically motivated, risking Turkey’s democratic integrity. Adem Bali, a 22-year-old supporter, argues, “I think there is an injustice committed against İmamoğlu. They put the man in prison for no reason.”

The EU and rights groups have condemned the arrest, indicating democratic backtracking. Consequently, potential EU-Turkey talks have been deferred amid these circumstances. CHP plans to challenge both the arrest and the annulment of İmamoğlu’s essential diploma for presidential eligibility.

Economic Concerns Amid Political Turmoil

President Erdoğan, aiming to assure economic stability, emphasized macroeconomic vigilance in response to market reactions following İmamoğlu’s detention. Turkish authorities have taken steps to mitigate the adverse market fallout, seen in the 16.6% Istanbul bourse drop. Analysts predict extended political and economic uncertainty tied to these events.

“The protests mark the most significant and widespread public reaction in over a decade, making the trajectory of events difficult to predict,” notes Wolfango Piccoli of Teneo consultancy, underscoring the potential economic toll.
