PSNI Officers Arrested Following Data Breach and Financial Support Program Fraud

Two officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have been arrested on suspicion of fraud connected to a financial support program offered following a significant data breach in 2023. The arrests stem from an investigation by the PSNI’s Anti-Corruption Unit.

Data Breach and Support Payments

In August 2023, the PSNI accidentally released personal details of nearly 10,000 officers and staff members as a result of mishandling a freedom of information request. This breach had a profound impact on the affected individuals and their families.

To provide support and help officers and staff enhance their security, the PSNI implemented a “universal offer” of £500 payments to all officers and staff. The vast majority, ninety percent, took advantage of this financial assistance.

Investigation and Arrests

Following a thorough investigation by the PSNI’s Anti-Corruption Unit, which concluded on January 29, 2025, two officers were arrested and subsequently bailed under investigation for fraud offences related to the financial support program.

Parallel misconduct investigations have also been launched. The arrested officers’ duty status is currently under consideration in accordance with PSNI regulations.

Commitment to Transparency and Accountability

The PSNI emphasized their commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. They acknowledged that breaches of these standards can severely damage public trust and confidence in policing.

“In these cases we will always seek to move swiftly and ensure an effective investigation to restore and maintain public confidence,” a PSNI spokesperson stated.

The investigation is ongoing, and further comments are considered inappropriate at this time.
