Jury Clears Two Officers of Civil Rights Charges in Nichols Death
A federal jury in Memphis acquitted two former police officers of civil rights charges on Thursday in the 2023 death of Tyre Nichols. While the jury cleared Tadarrius Bean and Justin Smith of the most serious federal counts, all three defendants—including Demetrius Haley—were convicted of witness tampering.
A Split Verdict on Constitutional Violations
The jury returned a mixed verdict: Bean and Smith were acquitted of federal charges accusing them of violating Nichols’ civil rights, which resulted in his death. Haley, however, was convicted of a lesser charge of violating civil rights resulting in bodily injury.

Cover-Up Charges Carry Heavy Penalties
Each of the three defendants now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison for those specific convictions.
The Fall of the SCORPION Unit
The video showed officers restraining and beating Nichols following a traffic stop. The defendants were members of the department’s SCORPION unit—an acronym for Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods—which was permanently deactivated shortly after the incident gained public attention.
Unfinished Legal Battles at the State Level
Five officers in total were involved in the beating. Beyond the three defendants in this federal trial, two other former officers have already entered guilty pleas to related charges. The legal process remains far from over; all five former officers involved in the encounter face separate state charges, including second-degree murder. A trial date for these state-level proceedings has not yet been established.
