Charity’s Erroneous £17,000 Gas Bill Resolved After Media Attention

A North East charity, Lifelong Ability North East (Lane), has had a £17,000 gas bill cleared after a two-year dispute with energy company Engie. The charity, based in Wallsend, North Tyneside, received the bills despite not being connected to a gas supply.

Lane moved into it’s current premises in 2023, at wich point the gas meter had already been capped. Despite this, Engie continued to send monthly bills, totaling £17,000. Gill Gray, a trustee at Lane, expressed relief at the resolution but criticized the timing, stating that the issue was only resolved “just as the press are involved.”

Engie has apologized for the error and stated it is reviewing its internal processes to prevent similar incidents. In addition to clearing the debt, Engie has pledged to make a charitable donation to Lane. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-wear-67644999
