UAdeC Celebrates Women in Science with Global Breakfast Initiative
Torreón, Coahuila – The Autonomous University of Coahuila (UAdeC), through its Faculty of Biological Sciences at Unidad Laguna, recently hosted the Global Women in Science Breakfast 2026, a worldwide initiative championed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).1 The event, held on February 16, 2026, aimed to strengthen networks of collaboration and increase the visibility of women’s contributions within the scientific community.2
“Many Voices, One Science”
The breakfast centered around the theme “Many Voices, One Science,” coinciding with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.1 This year’s event underscored the importance of diverse perspectives in advancing scientific knowledge and addressing global challenges.2
Panel Discussion Highlights Leadership and Challenges
The discussion panel was coordinated by Dr. Ayerim Hernández Almanza, leader of the Laboratory for Research and Development of Food Products.3 Participants included Dr. Erika Flores Loyola, Director of the Faculty of Biological Sciences; Dr. Mónica Lizeth Chávez González, an award-winning researcher recognized with the Latin American Woman in Chemistry Award; and Ms. Miriam Valenzuela Gloria, plant manager at Tomatillas.2
Panelists shared their experiences regarding leadership, research, and the unique challenges faced by women in scientific fields.3 Discussions highlighted the need for continued efforts to promote gender equality and create supportive environments for women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).2
Addressing Cultural Barriers and Promoting Collaboration
Dr. Erika Flores Loyola pointed out that cultural barriers still exist, often associating leadership roles with men, but emphasized women’s capabilities in leadership, highlighting empathy and strength.3 Dr. Mónica Lizeth Chávez González highlighted the importance of generating and sharing knowledge, noting that scientific research contributes to both professional and personal growth.3
Ms. Miriam Valenzuela Gloria provided the perspective from industry, emphasizing that leadership involves coordinating multidisciplinary teams and ensuring quality and safety.3
Global Initiative for Gender Equality in Science
The Global Women in Science Breakfast is part of a larger international movement, initiated by IUPAC, to promote equal opportunities, encourage scientific vocations among girls and young people, and recognize the contributions of women in knowledge generation.4 IUPAC’s Global Women’s Breakfast connected 449 events across 78 countries in 2025.4 The initiative aims to establish an active network to overcome barriers to gender equality in science.4
