UCI Reassures: Kigali 2025 World Cycling Championships On Track

Despite recent concerns regarding the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the International Cycling Union (UCI) has emphatically stated that the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, scheduled for Kigali, Rwanda, remain firmly on track.

Rumors circulating in the cycling community suggested the possibility of a “Plan B” relocating the event, sparking anxiety among athletes and fans. However, the UCI swiftly addressed these speculations, stressing that no alternative venue is being considered and Rwandan officials remain confident in their ability to host the event safely and successfully.

“We understand the anxieties surrounding the situation in the DRC,” a UCI spokesperson said in a recent statement. “However, we want to assure everyone that Rwanda remains a safe and welcoming destination for tourism and international events. The geographic distance between Rwanda and the conflict zone further mitigates any direct risk to the Championship.”

The UCI has highlighted its close collaboration with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), emphasizing that they are closely monitoring the situation and implementing necessary safety measures.

"We are working closely with the Rwandan authorities and the LOC to ensure the Championship is a resounding success," the UCI spokesperson added. "We remain confident in Rwanda’s ability to deliver a world-class sporting event.”

Rwandan officials also stand resolute in their commitment to hosting a successful World Championships. The event represents a historic moment for African cycling, showcasing the continent’s growing stature on the global sporting stage.

Hosting the world’s best cyclists in Kigali in 2025 is a testament to Rwanda’s commitment to peace, development, and the advancement of sports.
