UConn Shut Out Arizona, 4-0, Behind Strong Pitching Performance

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Connecticut baseball team secured a 4-0 shutout victory over the University of Arizona Wildcats on Friday evening at Hi Corbett Field, improving their record to 2-4. Arizona falls to 0-6 with the loss.

West Dominates on the Mound

UConn left-handed pitcher Charlie West delivered a stellar performance, earning the win with 6.2 innings pitched, allowing just three hits, two walks, and striking out nine batters. West retired 10 consecutive Wildcats batters at one point during the game. This marks the second-highest strikeout total of his career, surpassed only by a 13-strikeout performance against Georgetown on April 13, 2025.

Huskies Offense Finds Early Momentum

The UConn offense capitalized early, with Evan Menzel reaching first base on a walk in the first inning. Menzel then stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Jackson Marshall. Maddix Dalena continued his strong offensive showing, driving in three runs – a sacrifice fly in the third, a bases-loaded walk in the seventh, and a run on a fielder’s choice in the ninth. Dalena has now driven in six RBI over the series.

Meyers Closes Out the Game

Right-handed pitcher Paxton Meyers closed out the game for the Huskies, retiring seven of the eight batters he faced.

Series Continues Saturday

The series resumes on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. MT, with Cayden Suchy scheduled to start on the mound for UConn. This is the first shutout victory for the Huskies since a 4-0 win against Kansas State on April 16, 2024, and the fewest hits allowed (three) since a win at UC Irvine on March 13, 2024.

Game Notes:

  • Maddix Dalena and Jackson Marshall have combined to drive in nine of UConn’s 10 runs in the series.
  • Charlie West’s nine strikeouts are the second most in a game in his career.
  • The Huskies pitched a shutout for the first time since April 16, 2024.
