The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has received a €25,250 fine from UEFA following several incidents during Republic of Ireland’s Nations League match against England at Aviva Stadium in September.
UEFA issued a standard €10,000 fine for disturbances related to the booing of “God Save The King” by Irish fans before the match. Additional fines included €9,250 for lighting flares and €6,000 for a spectator invading the pitch.
**Tánaiste Criticizes Anthem Booing**
The booing of the English national anthem sparked significant controversy and drew criticism from Irish officials. Tánaiste Micheál Martin expressed his displeasure, stating:
“I wasn’t happy with it. I think when we’re hosting any country in the world, we should pay respect to their anthem, just as they should pay respect to our anthem.”
While acknowledging that isolated incidents occur in football, Martin emphasized the positive aspects of the match, noting the overall “wonderful atmosphere” and the respectful behavior of the majority of fans.
**Ireland’s Defeat and Upcoming Fixtures**
Ireland suffered a 2-0 defeat against England, marking their first competitive loss to their English rivals since 1980. Declan Rice and Jack Grealish scored for the visitors. Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side will face England in the reverse fixture at Wembley on November 17, following a home match against Finland on November 14.
