Ricky Proehl and the St. Louis Battlehawks Prepare for 2026 UFL Season
The 2026 United Football League (UFL) season is set to begin this week, with the St. Louis Battlehawks kicking off their campaign against the defending champion DC Defenders on Saturday, March 28th, at The Dome at America’s Center . Newly appointed Battlehawks head coach Ricky Proehl has emphasized the high level of talent within the league and his excitement for the season ahead.
High Caliber of UFL Players
Proehl, a veteran of 17 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) and a two-time Super Bowl champion, believes the UFL provides a platform for players to showcase their abilities. “These guys can play,” Proehl stated. “The level is so high here… Some of them haven’t had the opportunity to showcase their talent and skill set.” He noted that training camp dynamics have evolved compared to his own playing days.
Battlehawks as Underdogs
Despite the team’s potential, the Battlehawks currently have the fifth-best odds to win the UFL championship . Proehl embraces this position, viewing it as a motivating factor. “Absolutely,” he said when asked if he thinks the Battlehawks are underrated. “But that’s OK. That’s kind of a good place to be. I’m excited about our football team… These guys are so much fun to coach.”
Fresh UFL Rules and Offensive Strategy
The 2026 UFL season will feature several new offensive-friendly rule changes designed to increase scoring and excitement. Proehl, identifying as “an offensive guy,” is particularly enthusiastic about the fourth-and-12 rule. This rule allows teams trailing in the fourth quarter to attempt a fourth-and-12 conversion from their own 28-yard line as an alternative to an onside kick. Proehl recalled a past instance where the Battlehawks capitalized on this rule to score 16 points in a short span.
Key Players for the Battlehawks
The Battlehawks’ roster boasts several key players, including quarterback Brandon Silvers, who has prior UFL and XFL experience. Hakeem Butler returns as a receiver, alongside standout outside linebackers Pita Taumoepenu and Travis Feeney. All-UFL defensive tackle Carlos Davis will also be a crucial addition to the team’s defense.
Proehl’s Vision for the Battlehawks and the UFL
Proehl believes the UFL is “on the cutting edge of changing the game,” emphasizing the league’s commitment to exciting, high-scoring contests. He also highlighted the strong support from St. Louis fans, calling the city “one of the best sports towns in our country.” He replaced Anthony Becht, who transitioned to head coach of the Orlando Storm.
