Norovirus Alert: Public Urged to Avoid University Hospital Kerry if Experiencing Symptoms

University Hospital Kerry (UHK) is advising individuals experiencing symptoms of norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, to refrain from visiting the hospital. This precautionary measure aims to protect patients and staff from the highly contagious virus, which is currently circulating at high levels.

What is Norovirus?

Norovirus causes gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Some individuals may also experience a mild fever, headache, stomach cramps, or aching limbs. The virus is highly contagious and can spread quickly through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces.

HSE Advice for Those with Symptoms

The HSE South West is urging anyone with a scheduled appointment at UHK who is experiencing these symptoms to contact the hospital before attending. Individuals are also advised to avoid visiting hospitals, nursing homes, or vulnerable people at home. Social visits to care settings should also be avoided while unwell. Dr. Margaret O’Sullivan, Consultant in Public Health Medicine with the HSE South West, emphasized the importance of these precautions, stating, “Your actions will make a difference.” Radiokerry.ie

Visiting Arrangements at UHK

Currently, there are no changes to visiting arrangements at UHK, but the situation is being closely monitored and may be subject to change. Visiting hours are Monday to Sunday from 2pm–4pm and 6pm–8pm, with a limit of two visitors per patient for a total of 30 minutes. Extended visiting arrangements are in place for maternity patients, allowing husbands or partners to visit from 12.30pm to 8.30pm. Radiokerry.ie

Prevention Measures

To prevent the spread of norovirus, the HSE recommends frequent handwashing with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before preparing food. Surfaces should be disinfected regularly, and contaminated clothing should be washed at a high temperature.
