UK Detects Two More Cases of New Mpox Variant Ib

LONDON, United Kingdom – Britain has identified two additional cases of the new mpox variant clade Ib, linked to a previously confirmed case in a household contact. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to three, as announced by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on Monday.

Officials emphasize that the risk to the general population remains low. Clade Ib is a newly identified form of the mpox virus, which prompted a global health emergency declaration by the World Health Organization in August.

“Mpox is highly infectious in households with close contact, so it is not surprising to see further cases within related households,” stated UKHSA.

Last week, UKHSA reported the initial case in London, involving a traveler returning from virus-affected countries in Africa. The patient was admitted to a specialist hospital.
