UK Artillery Shell Plant for Ukraine Delayed, Impacting Supply to Front Lines

A new British factory intended to significantly boost artillery shell production for Ukraine is experiencing delays, pushing back its operational start date by over six months. The facility, located in Glascoed, South Wales, was expected to play a crucial role in replenishing dwindling UK stockpiles and increasing the flow of ammunition to Ukraine, but production has yet to begin.

Capacity Expansion Drives Delay

BAE Systems, the owner and operator of the Glascoed facility, confirmed the delay, attributing it to a mid-construction decision to double the plant’s planned capacity. According to BAE Systems, this strategic move aims to increase 155mm production capacity by up to sixteenfold. “After construction began, we took the strategic decision to double the output capacity beyond our original design to increase our 155mm production capacity by up to sixteenfold, which had an impact on the schedule,” a BAE Systems spokesperson stated. RBC Ukraine reported.

Importance of 155mm Artillery Shells

Defense analysts emphasize the critical importance of 155mm artillery shells in modern warfare. Francis Tusa, a defense analyst, described these shells as “the bedrock of all armies when they go into war,” highlighting the necessity of adequate stockpiles. The Guardian noted.

Production Levels and Comparison

Prior to the expansion, BAE Systems produced between 3,000 and 5,000 155mm shells annually. Even with a sixteenfold increase, the Glascoed plant is projected to produce a maximum of approximately 80,000 shells per year. This contrasts with the capacity of Rheinmetall, a German arms manufacturer, which opened a new plant in 2025 expected to produce up to 1.1 million shells per year by 2027. RBC Ukraine

Broader UK Support for Ukraine

Despite the delay, the UK continues to provide substantial military aid to Ukraine. More than half a billion pounds sterling has been allocated to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses, including the transfer of 1,000 light multi-purpose missiles, 1,200 air defense missiles, and hundreds of thousands of artillery shells. Ukraine is also slated to receive Nightfall hypersonic missiles from the UK, a ballistic missile system with a range exceeding 500 kilometers and a 200-kilogram warhead. The Guardian

International Aid Pledges

On February 12, partners within the Ukraine Defense Contact Group committed to providing $35 billion in new military assistance to Ukraine, focusing on bolstering air defense systems and drone capabilities.
