Ukraine War: Russia Intensifies Attacks as Peace Talks Stall

Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack across Ukraine on Sunday, targeting energy infrastructure and residential areas, just days before the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion. The attacks came as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, including trilateral talks involving the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia, have shown limited progress. Meanwhile, Hungary is blocking a new EU sanctions package against Russia unless Ukraine reopens a key oil pipeline.

Recent Attacks and Damage

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia launched approximately 50 missiles and 300 drones overnight, primarily targeting the energy sector. Damage was also reported to residential buildings and railway infrastructure. In Kyiv and its surrounding region, one man was killed, and a dozen others, including four children, were injured, according to Ukrainian national police. BBC News reports that rescuers are working to clear debris from a largely destroyed house in Kyiv’s Sofiivska Borshchagivka suburb.

Russia’s defense ministry claimed to have successfully hit all designated military targets. A Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s Belgorod region resulted in two deaths, according to authorities there. Poland’s Operational Command scrambled jets in response to detecting long-range Russian aviation conducting strikes on Ukrainian territory.

An explosion in Lviv, a city in western Ukraine, killed a policewoman and wounded 25 people after officers responded to a reported break-in. Authorities detained a Ukrainian woman suspected of carrying out the bombing, suggesting potential Russian involvement, according to Ukraine’s interior ministry. BBC News

Diplomatic Efforts and Stalled Progress

The United States continues to push for a resolution to the conflict, having brokered several rounds of trilateral talks in January and February. However, Russia has consistently reiterated its demands, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently underscoring that any negotiations must revolve around Ukraine accepting Russia’s territorial and political demands. The Kyiv Independent reports that Lavrov referenced alleged “Anchorage agreements” from a 2025 summit with then-U.S. President Donald Trump, which purportedly envisioned Ukraine surrendering territory without fighting, though the White House has not confirmed their existence.

Hungary Blocks EU Sanctions

Hungary is currently blocking the EU’s latest package of sanctions against Russia, demanding that Ukraine reopen the Druzhba oil pipeline, which supplies the country with Russian oil. Ukraine claims the pipeline was damaged by Russian strikes in late January.

War’s Impact and Ukraine’s Position

As Ukraine approaches the four-year mark of Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, the war has caused widespread destruction, displacement, and casualties. Russia currently occupies approximately a fifth of Ukrainian territory and continues to make incremental gains, particularly in the eastern Donbas region. Despite these challenges, President Zelensky maintains that Ukraine is “definitely not losing” the war and that victory remains the ultimate goal. He stated that Ukrainian forces have recently reclaimed around 300 square kilometers of territory, though this claim has not been independently verified.

Recent Ukrainian Strike Inside Russia

On Saturday, Ukrainian forces struck a major missile factory deep inside Russia, in the Udmurt Republic, using Ukrainian-made FP-5 “Flamingo” cruise missiles. The attack wounded 11 people, three of whom were hospitalized, according to local health officials. AP News reports that the site was identified as a key state-owned missile plant.
