Ukraine plans to significantly increase it’s drone interception capabilities, aiming to deploy at least 1,000 drone interceptors per day to defend against escalating Russian drone attacks. This announcement was made by Ukrainian Defense Minister Denis Shmyhal during a press conference in Kyiv on September 18, 2025, alongside Polish colleague Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh, as reported by Suspilne Media.

Rising Drone Threat from Russia

The need for increased drone defense comes as Russia intensifies its use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in attacks against Ukraine.Shmyhal stated that Russia is currently launching approximately 800 drones per night, necessitating a significant increase in Ukraine’s interception capacity.

Challenges Beyond Drone Production

While Ukraine is capable of producing the necessary number of drones, Shmyhal emphasized that the primary challenge lies in establishing the supporting infrastructure. This includes developing and deploying ground-based control complexes, advanced radar systems, and incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) for effective drone guidance. He described the implementation of this complex system as a process that will take time, but expressed confidence in ukraine’s progress towards achieving its goal, citing adherence to established timelines.

Recent Russian Attacks and Ukrainian Defense

The announcement follows a recent wave of attacks on the night of September 18, 2025, where Russian forces launched 75 attack UAVs, including Shahed and Gerbera models, as well as other drone types. ukrainian air defense systems successfully neutralized 48 of these drones, though some strikes resulted in impacts at six locations.

Future Outlook

Ukraine’s commitment to deploying 1,000 drone interceptors daily represents a significant step in bolstering its air defense capabilities. The successful integration of advanced technologies like AI and robust radar systems will be crucial in countering Russia’s evolving drone warfare tactics and protecting critical infrastructure.Continued international support and investment in these technologies will be vital for Ukraine’s long-term security.
